NOTE: Silent Auction time has changed to 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.!
For over a decade, Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO), a small 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Waimea, has been tasked with the mission of protecting Hawaii’s communities and natural resources from the growing threat of wildfire and its impacts. Within the past decade, Hawaii’s proportion of land area burned each year has either matched or exceeded that of any of the fire-prone Western U.S. states. The impacts of wildfire range from human safety to native forest destruction to coral reef smothering caused by post-fire erosion and run-off.
Although the situation may seem dire, there is great hope on the horizon. Since 98% of wildfires in Hawaiʻi are caused by humans and many are caused accidentally, we can all work together to help solve this issue by spreading the word about wildfires and the ways we can prevent them and protect our families, communities, and lands.
If you would like to get involved right away and offer your kōkua, April 19th is the day to mark in your calendar. On this coming Sunday, Hawaii Wildfire is teaming with Rotary Club of Kona and Denny’s to host Project Compassion at Denny’s Restaurant in Kona from 4:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. With your generous support, you can help us continue and expand our outreach efforts. Hawaii Wildfire will receive 20% of the food and beverage sales and 100% of guest servers‘ tips.
Project Compassion is a partnership between the Rotary Club of Kona, Denny’s Restaurant and non-profit organizations in West Hawaii. Monthly events have raised awareness for many Hawaii-based non-profits and thousands of dollars to support their porgrams. All proceeds from the events go to the participating non-profit.
There will be special events throughout the evening that are open to the whole family:
- Hawaii Fire Department will bring an engine for keiki to explore.
- There will be also be a “goat dozer” petting zoo.
- Live music will be on hand courtesy of some local firefighter-musicians.
- Hawaii Wildfire will have plenty of giveaways for the keiki including items featuring Kaleo the Pueo, Hawaii’s brand new wildfire prevention mascot.
- To round off the event, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization will hold a silent auction with products from Snorkel Bob’s, Red Water Café, KTA, and HWMO!
Residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy a meal and support a wonderful local organization - reservations are not required.
Like all of HWMO’s projects and events, this night is made possible through a collaboration of entities ranging from wildfire suppression agencies to goat herders to musicians. A big mahalo goes out to Hawaii Wildfire’s sponsors: Adventure X Boat Tours, Laughing Stock Farms, Red Water Café, and Snorkel Bob’s.
