Wildfire Community Preparedness Day 2018

The 5th anniversary of national Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is on Saturday May 5, 2018. If you have a project in mind for your community to improve the fire safety of your community, fill out a brief application for the chance to receive one of 150 $500 grants from State Farm through the NFPA. The application period is from January 8 until March 2.

State Farm has helped fund several Wildfire Prep Day projects on Hawaii Island through this grant, including work days in Waikoloa Village, Honokoa, and Kanehoa. HWMO also received two grants from State Farm over the last couple of years to assist our effort in growing the Firewise Communities movement in Hawaii. We thank them for their kokua and commitment to improving wildfire protection for communities on the islands.

"We had a very busy May 6 fire fuel reduction project. Approx. 6 tons of dry trees, grasses, shrubs, etc were removed and mulched to be used along the borders to further reduce our fire risks. We are very grateful for the funding that allowed us to make our community a more fire resistant and safer place to live."
Diane " Makaala" Kanealii, Executive Director, Kailapa Community Association (this quote is featured on the national page - thanks for representing Hawaii proudly, Makaala and the Honokoa Firewise Community!)
